Leadership 101: The Introduction

Leadership 101 serves as an introduction to the leadership studies minor. General topics include the definition and basic tenets of leadership, how leadership differs from management and power wielding, as well as the traits/characteristics of leaders and followers including credibility, motivation, change, conflict, and identity. Students will begin to determine who they are, who they want to be, and how they want to interact with the world and create a roadmap for their own personal leadership development journey.

Leadership 102: The Knowledge Builder

This course elevates student awareness of the theoretical foundations of leadership as well as the skills, values, attitudes and emotions that motivate leaders to take action. Topics include an historical perspective of leadership, the study of a great leader, the 7-C Social Change Model, ethical awareness, decision making, power, influence, credibility, integrity, values formation, and system thinking.

Leadership 103: The Skillbuilder

Leadership 103 is an experiential skill-building course requiring students to be actively engaged in the observation of a social change organization or initiative while learning skills and practices necessary for influencing change.

Leadership 104: The Practice

This macro-level leadership course focuses on the leadership of teams, organizations and community. The first part of the course examines issues related to the leadership of teams, building effective teams, conflict management, team role structures, and creating team viability. The second part of the course examines issues related to the leadership of organizations and community - creating a shared vision, building a leadership culture, championing organizational change, and the political realities of leading. This course will help students become effective and ethical leaders, as well as integrate and apply knowledge and experiences from prior courses. The course experiences will culminate in a project.

Leadership 105: The Final Touches

In the capstone experience in the Leadership Studies minor, students are actively engaged in an action oriented, service learning project to create a meaningful change with the goal of creating a better community for oneself and others. Students will define and implement a change initiative. Students will complete assignments and the document the experience in a reflective Personal Leadership Development Journal (PLDJ). The PLDJ is an online, interactive reflection journal that students complete with reaction and interaction with the instructor. The experience finishes with a presentation highlighting the social change work as well as each students individual understanding and articulation of their strengths, opportunities, and development goals as a leader.
